THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL
nervous even to tell him about tonight. Besides, he doesn’t like Chris
— but I do. So will he even accept the truth?
“A hangout with one of my friends at a restaurant in that new
park.”
Jayson tilted his head, crossing his arms. “I know almost all your
friends, Kandis, and most of them are just Nellie and me. So who else
are you talking about?”
“Chris.” I blurted it out quickly. “Chris and I hung out at a
restaurant.”
Jayson scoffed and rolled his eyes — and I honestly didn’t know
why he did that.
“I knew it. Eventually, you and that guy would… go on a date.”
I shook my head firmly. “It wasn’t a date. Well, I think it kind of
was, but like I said, I’m trying to get a boyfriend this year, so maybe
Chris—”
“Stop! Just stop,” he yelled out. “I don’t care about that stupid plan
of yours. It’s like you lied to me! You said you wouldn’t bother talking
to boys this school semester — especially ever since that one guy in
10th grade broke your heart. You said you also wouldn’t bother dating
anyone because your parents wouldn’t accept it anyway. And it was my
idea to get a partner when we started high school!”
Jayson’s words caught me off guard. I hadn’t expected that — and
the shock lingered longer than I cared to admit. But first of all, how
could he think I lied? People change their minds. And as a best friend
since childhood, he knows I can easily fall in love with guys.
