THAT WASN’T THE PLAN
And second of all — why does he even care? Is this the reason he’s
been so upset with me all week?
“I… I should’ve known then? I mean, does it matter anymore? I
know you don’t like Chris, but I still don’t get it. Have you been angry
at me because of my boyfriend plan, Chris, or something else?”
Jayson let go of Perrie’s harness slowly and looked down. “You
broke my heart, Kandis. And now you’re spending time with some new
guy you barely even know. I can tell you like him — probably more
than you’re willing to admit. You’re already thinking about dating,
even when this semester was supposed to be about staying focused.

rain came down slowly, then faster. It made the situation feel even more
tense.
But I still didn’t understand him. Was Chris now unnecessary in
my life?
“Wait… how did I break your heart, Jayson?”
I could hear him swallow hard. “I liked you. But you decided to
like and love someone else—you don’t know as much as you know me.
That’s how.”
“Well, yeah, everyone likes me. I’m a—”
He cut me off, looking up to meet my eyes. “No. I mean… I liked
you.”
