CHAPTER 3

          A
fter checking out the lab, we decided to go to the gym. But

before we could get there, Joan put his phone back in his
pocket and tapped Samantha on the shoulder.

               “Race you to the gym!”
Samantha startled a little but still yelled, “Joan! You cheater!”

They both took off running before us, leaving me and Travis

walking alone. I felt like melting. It was so quiet, and we weren’t saying
          anything.

“So…” Travis looked down. “How long have you been in this
          school?”

I hadn’t been here long—just under three years, really.

“Uh… just two years. I’m a sophomore,” I said, placing my hands
          behind me.

“Oh, okay. This is my fifth school, actually.”
“Wait, really? How?” I turned fully to face him.

“My parents got divorced when I was in first grade. That was my
second school. And since then… it’s just been one move after another.

Every time I try to settle in, we’re packing up again. So I might move

from this school… again.” He frowned, eyes drifting away from mine.
“Oh, I’m sorry—about the divorce, I mean. But don’t worry, this

school’s actually fun. You might end up loving it so much you won’t
          even want to leave.”
