BETWEEN THE LANES
“Yeah, well, that’s not really my call. It’s my mom’s. I live with
her now.”
“Do you… ever visit your dad?”
“Sometimes. Usually just on weekends,” he shrugged.
Poor guy. He’s kind of like me—growing up with only one parent.
The only difference is… at least he still sees both of them. I’ve never
even seen my mom. And maybe I never will.
After that talk, we all entered the gym and showed Travis around.
We wanted to play a little game of basketball, but we didn’t have
enough time, so we just left and went to the last class—our homeroom.
By tomorrow, this is where we’ll be staying. Practically learning.
“Wow, this room is big. Twice the size of my former class in my
old school,” Travis uttered.
“Yeah, I know,” Samantha said. “It’s not much of a surprise,
though. Almost all the classes in this school are big—very big!”
“Wow, I can’t wait to see some tomorrow.” Travis smiled.
We all decided to race back to the office, just for fun. Surprisingly,
Samantha and Joan were trailing behind while Travis and I were side
by side, competing to see who’d take the lead. I slid past him at one
point, accidentally making him stumble a bit—but before I could even
check if he was okay, he’d already gotten back on his feet and dashed
ahead. He beat me to the office door in seconds. I stood there,
breathless, my chest rising fast—but what confused me the most was
how he recovered so quickly and still managed to win.
