CHAPTER 6
T
his day was the day I was going to school… again. I was
pretty happy and a little annoyed because, one: school
sessions are the worst here and pretty much boring; and two:
I get to meet my best friend, who has always made me smile since third
grade. She’s practically my sister.
That morning, I decided to wear light blue flared jeans and a white
shirt with a black cross on it. I wanted to put on makeup, but I knew it
would make me kind of ugly since I can’t do makeup well. But of
course, I had to put on my special makeup—the Sephora blush powder.
Anyway, as I went downstairs for breakfast, I saw Dad in the
kitchen with a depressed face. I rushed to his side, worried, and asked,
“Dad, what’s wrong?”
He looked at me with a crooked smile.
“Oh, nothing, sweetheart. Just eat your food and get to school
quickly.”
“But, Dad, I can tell something’s wrong.”
“Just…” he murmured, “eat your food and get to school.”
I obeyed and quickly finished my fried egg and mint tea.
Afterward, I put on my jacket and boots and waved at Dad. But all he
did was give me a half smile. Right then, I knew something was wrong
with him—because he definitely wasn’t himself.
