CHAPTER NINE





          A
                     fter  leaving  there,  I  went  to  work  in
                     Mandeville as a maid. I went to work with

                     another  family.  They  weren’t  very  nice  at

          all; plus, my mother became sick. But she didn’t want
          me to come home, so I kept working. She also needed

          money for medication, which I was able to supply.

          She was admitted to the hospital. I can’t remember how

          long  she  was  there,  but  she  left  on  her  own  and
          eventually passed away at home. We buried her in the

          family plot.


          I stayed around for a while and then moved on. Through
          a domestic recruiting office, after paying them a certain

          amount of money, they found me a job in Kingston. So
          here I go to the big city.


          I  met  a  girl  on  the  bus;  the  journey  was  so  long  we

          became  friends.  We  promised  to  look  each  other  up
