CHAPTER TEN
N
o one told me anything, but as I got older, I
tried to figure out what could have happened
in my mother's life. She was the first child
born to her parents. After she was born, they went their
separate ways and each got involved with someone else.
Mom had a child with a man who took the child from
her because it was a boy. Again, she was left alone. So,
out of desperation, she lived with this man — who is
now my stepfather.
The Woman at the Well
Another short story my mom read to me was The
Woman at the Well. I love putting these stories in my
own words, though she often teases, "You are a strange
child!"
