This woman wanted to fetch a bucket of water and
return home quickly, before the other villagers came
out. She had a very difficult reputation in her
community, and no one seemed to like her. But as she
approached the well, a man was sitting there who asked
her for a drink.
She hesitated, unsure what to do, because he was of a
different race – a Jew, while she was a Samaritan. Yet,
he gently insisted that if she truly knew who he was—
the one asking her for a drink—she would gladly ask
him for living water. (Jesus' disciples had, at this point,
gone into town to buy food.)
After a profound conversation where Jesus revealed
deep truths about her life and His identity, she was so
excited that she immediately went back and told
everyone who would listen—which seemed to be the
entire village! A great spiritual awakening followed in
that village. Jesus and His disciples remained there for
a few more days, teaching them about the Kingdom of
God.
