• Over-Seed: Broadcast seed evenly at the recommended rate. Fescue: 8-12 lbs. of seed per 1,000 sq. ft.; Ryegrass: 12-15 lbs. of ryegrass seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
• Starter Fertilizer: Apply starter fertilizer at the time of seeding as well. Use nothing high in nitrogen, using more phosphorous than anything. (18-24-12)
Tree and Shrub Care
• In ideal conditions, your landscape needs 1”-2” of precipitation during the growing season per week. This can come from rainfall or other means of irrigation.
• Inspect your landscape.
• Pre-Emergent: Weeds in flower beds are the archnemesis for homeowners. Apply a
Pre-Emergent to prevent a variety of weeds from germinating so as to reduce
hand-pulling or spray applications to control weeds.
• Post-Emergent: Weeds are also up and active this time of year. Apply a post-emergent,
such as Round-Up, to control active weeds. Round-Up is a non-selective herbicide. Be
careful not to drift onto other trees and shrubs.
• Insect and Disease Application: Apply an insecticide to control insects and a fungicide
to control and prevent ornamental diseases.
OCTOBER
Warm Season Turf: Bermuda and Zoysia
• Mowing: Mowing should slow down in October. Keep the height of the mower high (4”). Remember, there is a good chance that top growth will not resume until next spring. Do not scalp the lawn. Never cut more than 1/3 of your grass blade on each cutting.
• Watering: In ideal conditions, your lawn needs 2” of precipitation during the growing season per week. It is best to have less frequent, heavy soakings. This can come from rainfall or other means of irrigation. Do NOT overwater. This can be more detrimental than of lack of precipitation.
• Fertilizer: No fertilizer needs to be applied other than potassium, provided it is recommended by the soil analysis.
