With a population just over 3,000, Newbern offers residents and visitors all the comforts of a small town. The city’s downtown is rich in local businesses and history.
In recent years, the city has underwent various renovations to beatify the area, with a host of quality-of-life projects still in the making. Moving forward, Newbern Mayor Pam Mabry says grant funds from the
city’s Master Park Plan will soon allow for upgrades to the city’s tennis courts, parks, ballfields and a splash park.
Newbern is also home to the 2nd largest industry in the county, Tyson Foods. This is in addition to four other industries. One of the staples of Newbern can also be found downtown— a 104-year-old depot station.
The City of Newbern and downtown businesses play host to a variety of annual community events.
Newbern hosts an annual Depot Days Festival that draws thousands in attendance. In the fall and winter months, the town hosts a Trick or Trick Downtown event, Polar Express at the depot station, and the Christmas Parade.
Newbern also has a Letters to Santa
Box that shows up each year right after Thanksgiving and disappears shortly before Christmas. Students at Newbern Elementary walk from the school to Santa’s mailbox downtown each year to drop their letters in. Each child gets a response back from “yours truly” at the North Pole.
