When you go to join, you oten run into typical
challenges – people can’t get into the call, there
are audio problems, and so on... this happens
more oten than not, and you’re led to wonder
what’s wrong with your laptop or the network
when, in fact, these may well be self-inlicted
Now available through technology mishaps.
here are ive common pitfalls associated with
Avaya DevConnect using laptops for meeting room collaboration:
Your laptop, or any portable PC or tablet
device, was not designed to support a group AV experience.
Select Product Program
Even if it were, your device is likely running
50+ processes. Adding audio, video and content-
sharing to your device on top of the processes
already running causes the experience to be
substandard. he PC I am writing this on is
cct-solutions.com
running 105 processes already, but I sometimes
expect it to run a quality A/V workload – that’s
just crazy.
When you walk into the conference room,
you set your laptop device on the table and
begin your UC video/audio/content call. You
connected quickly but you used the ubiquitous
wireless 802.11 (pick a letter) network to make
your connection, but you didn’t consider
bandwidth restraints. he latency of Wi-Fi
network causes the video and the audio to be
interrupted and distorted during the call.
One way to ix this is to bring an Ethernet cable
with you and take advantage of your company’s wired network.
Even with excellent bandwidth, the Wi-Fi
network may not be optimized for HD voice,
video and content. While there are companies
that make access points for real-time, multimedia
applications, a generic access point treats all data
the same and voice and video are not the same
as browsing or e-mail data. Again, a physical
connection is best bet.
Finally, you are likely using the substandard
(and I mean REALLY substandard) microphone
and camera that came with your laptop device.

collaboration session.
You need the right tool and a laptop is not it.
Today’s UC platforms have dedicated conference
room systems that provide a high-quality
experience with the familiar user interface you’ve come to know and (maybe) love. How you solve
these issues collectively depends on the scale and
resources your organization can aford. Most
medium and large enterprises can’t just throw
dedicated PCs into conference rooms. Anyone
who has tried, knows the pitfalls of an open PC in
a common area. It’s a security and management
headache, and the distribution point for all the
company secrets when people leave their USB
sticks and conidential content on the conference
room PC.
Conclusion: Don’t use the wrong tool for the
job. Evaluate purpose-built room systems that
facilitate efective meetings. ■
