phone doesn’t serve a purpose. Defendants of the
desktop phone’s worth maintain its relevancy as a
basic staple in the workplace environment.
What if the desk phone isn’t becoming extinct
but is simply evolving? here is no denying that
today’s workforce is becoming more mobile,
Now available through which creates the need for “anytime, anywhere”
access on any device. From the desk phone, to
Avaya DevConnect the mobile phone, to the phone in your home
oice – it makes our lives easier to have access to
the same functionality regardless of our physical locations. Now, this concept may be viewed as a

luxury, but eventually it will be a necessity.
As more organizations look to implement
IP phones that enable uniied communications
platforms to serve their business needs, it’s
true that the phones we see today will change.

However, they will still exist. he endpoints will
evolve to allow for multiple methods of seamless
communication, whether its voice, video, or
instant messaging.
While there are tangible beneits behind the
push for UC – increased productivity, improving
eiciencies, and reduced travel expenses – at
its most basic level, uniied communications is
about building more meaningful relationships
and experiences. Nothing can take the place of
face-to-face communication; however, this is not
always possible. UC provides the power to create
these experiences with the touch of a button.
As an industry, the debate shouldn’t be about whether the desktop phone will exist or not,
but rather on what technology providers can
do to ease the adoption of UC for customers.
To achieve optimized communications, it’s
important to visualize this transition with the end
goal in mind and work backwards to fulill that
vision with the technology. his approach allows
organizations to ind a strategy that makes sense
for their speciic business needs – there is no one-
size-its-all solution.
Technology providers must have the ability
to ofer support in every stage of the lifecycle

to consider. Does my provider ofer phones with
UC capabilities as well as the legacy products
needed to support my existing platform? Do I
have the necessary networking infrastructure
in place to support the increased bandwidth for additional UC features? What do I do with my
legacy products once I upgrade my system?
Providers that continuously adapt to the
times and ofer comprehensive solutions can
help organizations upgrade at a pace that makes
sense for their business needs, rather than at
the accelerated rate that technology changes in
the industry. he desktop phone as we know it
may become extinct, but the capabilities that UC
provides will allow it to evolve into something
new.
As seen in the commercial that aired during
the “Big Game” featuring Katie Couric and
Bryant Gumbel, people learn to evolve with the
times. In 1994, the Internet was new and the
debate was the meaning behind the @ symbol.
Needless to say, we’ve quickly adapted and what
was the next big idea is now commonplace.
Within the next few years, the desktop phone will certainly evolve to provide additional
features and may take on a diferent appearance,
but its business purpose remains. Our ability as
organizations to evolve as the technology changes
is what will separate those who succeed from
those who become extinct. ■
