Earlier this fall I had the opportunity
to interview Mario Martinez, Network Connect.
Infrastructure Manager for LINN Energy
in his Houston, TX oices. We started our
discussion with a focus on the situation at LINN
that spurred change in their communications
infrastructure, and started their journey to
Uniied Communications with Microsot Lync.
Mario noted that “before moving to Lync, LINN
Energy was using a legacy PBX system which
was not meeting our organizations needs and
as LINN grew, was very cost-prohibitive to
scale up.” It seems that as the organization
expanded, the PBX was becoming increasingly
expensive, requiring a major reexamination of
their infrastructure. “By moving to Lync, we
could deploy Uniied Communications across the
entire enterprise for half the cost.”
In addition to the cost equation, LINN was
also missing out on advanced collaboration
capabilities. “With our legacy phone system, all
we could do was make phone calls and listen to
voice mail” With employees dispersed across the
various oice and energy production facilities,
clear and concise communications was a priority.
As Mario explained, it was time for a change
and Microsot Lync was the answer.
However, many of the energy production
facilities deal with signiicant risk, both personal safety and environmental risks, requiring access
to local emergency services. “Some of our
facilities include gas processing plants and other
roles. We want to make sure that if any issues
arise, local emergency services can respond
promptly”
To ensure those services were always available,
LINN chose an architecture that put an
AudioCodes Mediant 1000 Survivable Branch
Appliance (SBA) on site. he SBAs would be
deployed at each of their 40+ sites, providing
access to local emergency services no matter
whether their wide-area network was accessible
or in cases where there is an interruption in ne.
