regardless of what device or channel they are using to communicate with. By utilising Advanced Communications, they can provide an OTT-like experience that o ers greater opportunities for engagement with the customer, in addition to and instead of, the traditional SMS functionality to push information to their customers.
For example, many companies or stories will send an SMS to push information to their end users. At the moment, to speak to someone about a doctor’s appointment, customers
have to call the number given in the SMS and potentially wait on hold until an operator becomes available. However, if customers receive the reminder via RCS over IP, they have the option to chat directly through that single platform.
Imagine speaking to a colleague in another country on the phone, then being able to share a PowerPoint or PDF during the call in an instant, despite what operator or applications your colleague uses.
If an airline wanted to push a message to a customer, for instance, they could send it to
a third-party RCS gateway which would then determine whether a particular customer was on an RCS-capable device and, if so, push
a rich message – possibly a boarding pass – directly to their handset.
KLM, for example, o ers a service in which, a er booking their ight, passengers can choose to receive their booking con rmation, check-in noti cation, boarding pass and ight status via Facebook Messenger, but now that message can go via RCS or even SMS to ensure the user gets it.
DIVERSIFYING COMMUNICATIONS METHODS
is brings us to Messaging as a Platform (MaaP), which stems from RCS and provides operators with the opportunity to monetize messaging by opening up access to more content across the domain. MaaP creates
a new hybrid model, in which others, for example app developers and enterprises,
can build applications to send and receive messages, o ering users a more comfortable and e cient way to interact and enabling new application-to-person (A2P) use cases. It will also interwork with legacy and IP messaging services, as communication services transition, and is another speci cation being driven by the GSMA, which will launch in quarter two 2017 and includes APIs, plug-in integration and improved authentication and app security.
As networks evolve, we’re seeing an increasing interest in RCS from operators looking to provide OTT-style experiences to their subscribers.
Operators can regain their links to their subscribers via RCS, which represents an opportunity for operators to o er new types of services and reconnect with enterprise customers.
In the current environment, where businesses in every industry share fears over privacy and security, not only does RCS o er the assurance of encryption, but messages are routed within the private domain of the operator’s network rather than being transmitted across the internet.
Although operators will still need to ensure that their signalling networks are protected at their core in order to guarantee a truly secure network.
e stars are aligning for RCS; by enabling a more consistent and secure service regardless of network, OS or handset, operators can now o er richer communication capabilities that gives them the opportunity to monetize services, that their enterprise customers, can too leverage to transform their customer engagement. ●
with common industry-agreed set of features, including group chat, audio messaging, and video sharing, and improved technical enablers. is, alongside Samsung’s recent acquisition
of RCS infrastructure and services provider, NewNet, represents encouraging news for the industry, demonstrating real con dence in the future of Advanced Messaging and its ability to deliver even better value and opportunities for enterprises to leverage the richer experiences RCS can bring to their communications e orts.
