on the CSP or the subscriber and revenue is lost. However, with the scale and speed of 5G, in-event fraud detection and prevention is easier said than done.
So how can CSPs effectively manage the sheer volume, velocity, variety and complexity of fraud threats in the 5G era? Below are four tips to success:
1. Analyze data available from multiple channels
continued from page 1
Fraud has entered an era of complexity that is unprecedented, though complexity has long since been a fraudster’s secret weapon. Traditional fraud analysis involved analyzing call detail records (CDRs), but CDRs lack crucial information and are generated after a call is complete - once the fraud has already occurred. Leveraging Signaling System
No. 7 (SS7) however, contains additional information that may be crucial for fraud prevention, including: subscriber location,
inter switch call attempts, request for subscriber information and more. External radio probes or automated subscribers can also be used in conjunction with SS7 to detect fraud.
2. Automate fraud detection
In addition to monitoring and identifying fraud correctly (without blocking legitimate subscriber activity) it is crucial to block the fraudulent calls / texts, etc. before they are placed. The database needs to be intelligent and agile enough to detect changing fraud threats and counter threats. Enabling real-time predictive fraud detection and

prevention tools is a solution that drastically accelerates the identification and prevention of fraud before a transaction is complete, largely reducing risk and enhancing the overall brand experience.
3. Implement machine learning and complex event processing To block fraudulent transactions and users before fraud happens, the underlying database needs to analyze thousands of attributes, such as subscriber behavior, geolocation, device information, transaction type, etc., in real-time. Using built-in machine learning algorithms means these attributes can be compared to correct behaviors, and statistical anomalies can be identified and blocked in real-time, prior to the transaction occurring.
All of the above at 5G scale
5G promises to play an instrumental role
in defining the connected products of the future, including autonomous cars, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and smart cities, for starters. The stakes are high
and so is the potential ability for hackers
to exploit vulnerabilities stemming from
the technology. It is critical that database engines are able to ingest data from multiple channels, and automatically apply thousands of rules with built-in machine learning in mere milliseconds, while processing millions of operations/second. This is how to fight fraud in the 5G era. n
