 HISTORY OF HAUNTING
Halloween is a well known holiday around the world, but do you really know what you are celebrating?
Story by Kennedy Robbins
Halloween is a widely celebrated holiday in the world, but how much do you really know about our favorite holiday’s history? Halloween was first celebrated around 2,000 years ago during a Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival was held at the end of October and marked the end of the harvesting season and the beginning of Winter. October 31st was considered the day that the living and the dead crossed over, and the spirits came back to haunt the living. The use of costumes soon made themselves important and served as disguises for the living to hide from evil spirits. Most families only celebrate Halloween on all hallows eve, but there are an extra two days of the holiday that are not commonly celebrated. The first day is, of course, All Hallows Eve, the second is All Saints Day (Nov. 1), and lastly All Souls day (Nov. 2). The second day of the celebration; All Saints Day, celebrates the Christian saints. The third and last day of the celebration is All Souls Day, on this part of Halloween we celebrate the souls that have made it to the afterlife.
Paranormal activity such as ghosts are a big subject around Halloween time because of the myths and tales that have been circulating around the world since before people came up with the wild idea of witchcraft. There are many theories about what ghosts really are, the most common one is that there are multiple dimensions, and in one of them the dead lurk. We cannot see spirits but our consciousness can sense them. Another theory is that past lives have been recorded in the environment. Maybe what we really think was a spirit was just history playing out like a movie. But then again if that theory was true, how would they be able to interact with the living?
Witches were more often than not, not actually witches. Women (and sometimes men) who were accused of being a witch were most likely educated about how to use their resources effectively. Witches use herbs, stones, and nature, in general, for spells and potions. So when someone saw a person interacting with nature, they were accused of being a witch. Just because there were many false accusations, does not mean that witches were and still are not real. One of the most recognized witches is Mother Shipton. She made many predictions and prophecies that are still being proven true today. Some of her most famous predictions foretold the falling of the Spanish Armada, the execution of Mary Queen of Scots, the Internet, the Great Plague of London, and many other things including the start of a possible World War III.
aliens are a huge subject because of the recent area 51 raid and is a follow up to the paranormal activity section, they are a #2. The Pentagon had recently released information regarding “UFO’s”, and events that they had previously dismissed as “Military weaponry tests.” A Department of Defense spokesman said that the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program “did pursue research and investigation into unidentified aerial phenomena.” There have also been multiple occurrences and sightings of aliens around the world. One of the first reported alien abductions was in 1961, and the unfortunate pair were the Hill’s. One night they were driving back to their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on an isolated road. They later said that they saw a bright object that seemed to be following them. Around 5 a.m with no memory of the past two hours of their morning, they returned home. After a long while, they remembered what had happened: They had been abducted by aliens. Their story matched up with stories that will be reported in the future: They are taken by unidentified beings, experimented on, and sent home to not remember anything. Most people are either believers of aliens or not at all, but what is your opinion? Do they exist or are they purely fictional?
