renovation was the sculpting of four dragon hatchlings all around her.
Another expansion made to the sculpture of Annie was the interior of the cave. VanDercar sculpted furniture and a lamp out of stone to give off a stone age, caveman vibe.
The property was very popular by 1984, serving home to many local events and charity functions. In one event to benefit the American Cancer society, Annie and her little dragons were renamed Hope (Annie), Joy, Sunshine, and Chris. For some reason, the names never really stuck. People usually refer to the dragon as Annie and her hatchlings aren’t referred to at all.
Finally in 1988, VanDercar returned one last time to add a sunroof to the dragon.
By the late 1990s, the Dragon Point mansion was in a poor state. Even the beast itself had undergone too much hurricane damage and vandalization to remain standing. In 2004, the Dragon fell.
After the dragon fell, members of the community felt like apart of their home was missing. So, in 2012, Save Dragon Point was born. Peter Moolhizen is the president of the organization.
“Our [original] goal was to try to repurchase the property as a group, and that was an expensive adventure obviously. That’s what made us change our focus on trying to rebuild Annie, because that just wasn’t gonna happen anytime soon,” said Moolhuizen.
Since the repurchase of the property by Don Facciobene, Save Dragon Point’s mission has shifted to helping kids in Brevard. Peter Moolhuizen is the president of the new Annie and Kids Art and Education Foundation. The organization also helps with the Brevard Renaissance Fair and help kids pursue their dreams in acting.
Once the property was again repurchased, the plans for a new dragon were set in motion. In 2015, Florida Today released an article explaining the new dragon, whose name was to be named Rojak.
The supposed backstory around Rojak is that he was Annie’s fifth hatchling that was “hidden away from the world.” The new dragon would be at the same place and have two heads instead of one. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much news on the new statute, but Facciobene still plans to make Rojak a reality in the near future.
