The Reel Deal Story by Johan Reijm
George Washington was our first president and the father of our country.
You know he is on the dollar bill and
the quarter. Our nation's capital is named
for him and he has a big, pointy monument in that city. What I bet you didn't know is he loved to fish. Washington and several other presidents were passionate fishermen beside being leaders of the free world. Thomas Jefferson, Grover Cleveland, Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower, and Jimmy Carter were all avid fishermen, solidifying the idea that fishing has and will continue to be part of our grand, American culture.
Nearly everyone has tried to
catch a fish, even if it was when
they were little with bread balls and
a bobber. Fishing has been a part of
our American culture since before there
was an America, when native peoples fished to survive, and not just for enjoyment. Fishing is about more than just the fish. Most of fishing is all that goes on before and after that caught fish. What fishing really is about is what you can take away from it. If that's by yourself or with someone else it does not matter. It’s not about being great at fishing but rather something even more personal.
"[ I go fishing] to spend time
with my son, to get from all the distractions and just spend time with
him,” Mr. Nathaniel Johnson said. “It's something he can remember me by when I’m gone.”
Fishing provides a way to allow anyone to escape the burdens of life and to just simply relax. Which, as an Edgewood senior, that is not something you take carelessly or for granted.
"It allows me to forget about everything else in life," Logan North, 12, said. "And it is a good stress reliever."
Fishing is such an old and popular pastime because it goes along with many of the beliefs of what America was founded on. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Fishing provides liberty from everyday life while you are living
lines and the daily limit.
Although there is more you can take away from
fishing than just dinner and escape. Life lessons can be learned from fishing. The patience to wait for the fish to bite, the endurance of even when you aren't getting Patients, endurance and determination are common traits from just fishing. The friendly people you will meet while fishing can certainly teach you deeply as well. Talking to the local fishermen can boost your confidence, knowledge, and boldness overall. Another example is learning to enjoy the little things and living moment to moment. Fishing is deeply rooted in American history, culture and everyday life. It will continue to be as the tradition is passed on from one generation to the other, spending time with one another and to escaping the stresses of life. Ultimately, it is the life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that many Americans have experienced
for over 240 years, and will continue to enjoy.
