The ocean needs sharks to live. And we need the ocean! Shark conservation isn’t just a matter of do-gooderism; it’s in our direct self-interest as human beings.
No sharks means too many groupers, and too many groupers means no coral reefs.
To understand how the fish you eat comes to market, consult the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch to learn about which fish are being harvested sustainably, without shark or dolphin bycatch. Look out for fish that were caught through “longlining,” a practice that accidentally kills many sharks, turtles, and seabirds.
With enough pressure, big food businesses can be persuaded to change, and in so doing, help protect the oceans that sharks patrol.
Sharks are an important factor in maintaining the ecological balance, and for that alone, the shark deserves your respect.
