Classes to Take
Story by Molly Clark and Phoenix Boggs
EIGHTH GRADE
As an eighth grader, AP classes aren’t an option. But in eighth grade, it would be smart to start taking a world language such as Spanish, Latin, or French. Choose an elective that sounds fun to you. Middle school is a great time to experiment and try new things. If you have taken Algebra 1, you can take Geometry in eighth grade. Similarly, you can take Biology as an eighth grader if you took advanced science in the seventh grade.
TENTH GRADE
Dual enrollment classes at EFSC are offered for the first time in tenth grade. Many more AP options are available in tenth grade than in ninth, such as AP Music Theory, AP Computer Science Principles, and five AP history classes. As in ninth grade, you have your choice of about 20 different Performing Arts electives. If you have not started taking a World Language class already, this is the year you must start taking one. Three World Language credits are required for graduation.
TWELFTH GRADE
You have to complete a senior project in order to graduate. If you started taking AP Capstone in your junior year, you can continue down that path to meet your project credit. Other classes that cover senior projects are: Communications Methodology Honors and Experimental Science Honors. Your senior year is very important. Try not to “slack” in this year, but don’t overload your schedule with all AP classes unless you can handle the workload. Also, be aware of Dual enrollment or Early Admit as options for your upper class years.
It’s coming time to pick classes for the next school year. New classes become available when you move up a year, so every grade has something amazing to offer.
NINTH GRADE
Ninth grade is the first year that students are able to take AP classes. AP Human Geography and AP World History are offered to ninth graders. You can also take high school electives and choose between about 20 different Performing Fine Arts electives. You have to take Career Research in ninth grade, which you can take as a semester class or over the summer. Students are required to take HOPE, an online physical education class, at some point in their high school years. Many students choose to take HOPE in ninth grade.
          ELEVENTH GRADE
Your junior class selections are very important because many colleges look at your selections and your grades in this year in order to determine your level of academic rigor. You may want to take more rigorous classes, such as any one of the eight offered social studies classes for eleventh graders. You can start taking AP Capstone in your junior year. AP Capstone is a diploma program based on two year-long courses: AP Seminar and AP Research.
