Two Middle Schools Rated Best for Art in Florida
Brevard Public Schools is pleased to announce that The Florida Alliance for
Arts Education (FAAE) has recognized John F. Kennedy Middle in Rockledge and Southwest Middle in Palm Bay, as two of the best public schools for arts in the state. Both were named as Florida Arts Model Schools. Kennedy
received the designation for its outstanding programs in music and Southwest was selected for its excellent visual arts program.
The FAAE evaluates and approves schools based on criteria development by the Florida Department of Education, FAAE and Florida’s professional service associations for dance, music, theater and visual art. Florida Arts Model Schools o er exemplary arts and arts integration programs, instructional settings, and community connections.
“Excellence in arts education is still very much a vital goal of the Florida Department of Education,” said Julie Hebert, executive director of FAAE. “Through the Florida Arts Model Schools program, we’re ensuring that schools who have made a commitment to providing the highest quality arts programs for their students not only receive the recognition they deserve, but also receive the support they need in order to share the models for their success with schools that want to improve.”
The Florida Arts Model Schools awards will be presented to both schools at the summit during a special luncheon in their honor on June 24, 2017.
National Merit Scholarship Winners Announced
Three Brevard Public Schools seniors have been named 2017 national corporate-sponsored merit scholarship winners, one of the nation’s highest academic honors.
More than 1,000 distinguished high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards  nanced by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the  nalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. BPS’ scholars are as follows:
• Eric Beck, Viera High –
National Merit Southwest Airlines Co. Scholarship
• Summer Jasinski, Viera High –
National Merit Rockwell Collins Scholarship
• Benjamin Olsson,
Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High – National Merit Southwest Airlines Co. Scholarship
Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for  nalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage. Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years
of college undergraduate study and
provide annual stipends that range
from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some
provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.
Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.
