Construction Projects Begin As School Lets Out For Summer
By Susan Hann, PE, AICP, director of Planning and Project Management
You will see the signs of summer on campuses throughout the district starting soon, which means people in hard
hats will appear, safety fencing under construction, and air conditioning or roo ng materials stockpiled on site. Over the past few months the team has been preparing for what will be a very busy summer construction season. As the students leave campus on May 24, summer contractors will move in and get started.
Major construction projects will begin at 19 schools throughout the district. Here’s the summer vacation project plan:
If you are in the construction zone this summer, thanks for your patience and cooperation. This type of construction is typically messy and disruptive, so the team greatly appreciates all of you who will be enduring the chaos during June and July.

*These are the sales surtax facility renewal projects which may include other system renewal components such as electrical, building envelope, code, plumbing and utility systems. However, in all cases, the majority of the work is related to air conditioning systems.
School security projects are also starting. Eight schools are done; 11 schools are under construction; 13 more are under contract as of April and the rest should be under contract this month. Work will continue for the next 12 - 18 months, with fencing and access control improvements at each school.
A few things to remember about our summer projects:
• The sales surtax plan is very speci c about how the funds may be used. Much of the work will be “behind the scenes” to renew the essential systems such as air conditioning, electrical and building envelope. When students come back to school in the fall, they may not even notice a di erence.
• The sales surtax program was built on facility assessments that were done in 2014. During the planning stage for each school, sta and the design team update and prioritize the critical systems that must be addressed within the budget.
• The summer work is done in a highly compressed schedule that does not allow time for fully testing the systems. Many times, there will be operational problems that are discovered during the rst 30 - 60 days after school opens.
