The new faces and new rules of a new school year.
Stories by Rhiannon Drysdale and Luke Olson
Initially, Ms. Diane Phillips only taught AP Seminar and English 3 Honors. That changed when several of the students in her English 3 classes expressed a desire to be in AP Lang instead. So, instead of transferring them into one of Mrs. Hardy’s AP Lang classes, Phillips went to administration and asked to teach an new section of AP Lang.
Her dedication to her students may not be the first thing you notice about her, however. Anyone who has been in Phillips’s classroom, knows about her goats. She has thirty- three of them, many of whom are prominently featured in photos around her classroom. While many students might know Phillips as something along the lines of ‘the teacher with the goats’, she is definitely more than that.
“So far, so good... I’m very excited to be here,” Phillips said. “I’m just looking forward to making deep relationships with the students I’m lucky enough to have.”
Mr. Nicholas Stewart is the new assistant principal. He oversees facilities, parking, transportation, discipline
for high school, and athletics. He also helps with
school security.
While not working, Stewart goes hunting, goes fishing, and plays golf. He lives in Rockledge with his wife Katie and two daughters in elementary school, Olivia and Avery, who might come to Edgewood someday. With regards to Edgewood, however, Stewart wanted to make one thing clear: he is here to help.
“If you ever need anything, please come and see me,” said Stewart. “I’ll help any way that I can.”
Before joining the staff of Edgewood to teach English, Ms. Monica Marquez taught at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando. Her commute was about an hour each way. She met Mrs. Ingratta at a job fair, and when the opportunity presented itself to join the staff of this school, Marquez wasted no time in accepting.
“Everything happens for a reason,” said Marquez. “I’m meant to be here.”
Outside school, Marquez enjoys cooking, traveling, and teaching tricks to her Yorkie, Mango.
Ms. Susan O’Hern is the newest eighth grade science teacher. Before teaching at Edgewood she taught students at Johnston Middle, Melbourne. She has three pets,
a corgi named
Ned, a snake
Ziggy, and a cat
Beasly. Some
of the things she
enjoys doing while
she isn’t working
include kayaking,
paddle boarding,
going to national parks, traveling, and cooking.
“I’m really enjoying the few weeks I’ve been here... I think there have been some changes, but everything’s very smooth and easy to get to know people and the kids so I think that’s good,” said O’Hern.
