District Works to Attract, Retain Highest Caliber Workforce
Many people may not realize that along with our 4,500 teachers, Brevard Public Schools employs nearly the same number of
support personnel working in areas such as administration, nance, human resources, transportation, technology, food service, facilities and communications. Whether serving
in the classroom or in support, these people play a vital role to ensure every teacher and student has the necessary foundation to achieve his or her fullest potential.
It is therefore incumbent upon district leadership to focus our employee relations activities on two distinct initiatives: 1) Develop strategies based on the highest moral and ethical standards and create processes to ensure that we hold our 9,000 employees accountable if they choose to violate our clearly established criteria and 2) Attract, retain and develop the highest caliber workforce available.
Do a search on why employees leave an organization and
you will nd numerous reasons, including unmet workplace expectations, how leaders manage or relate to their sta , new opportunities, limited growth and advancement opportunities, feeling unrecognized or valued, work/life imbalance, and a
loss of trust in senior leaders. Lower pay is considered a factor, however research indicates that over 80 percent of employees who leave their jobs do so for reasons other than pay.
Whether teaching in a classroom, driving a bus, making payroll, or providing nutritious meals to our 72,000 students, our sta members serve one
of the noblest
missions in life and should be compensated to re ect their service to our children.
It is why we have
made it one of
our strategic plan
priorities, β€œto
annually negotiate
fair and competitive salaries and bene t options for all employee groups.” It is my mission to ensure that we maximize the use of every resource to meet this strategic objective. One way we are accomplishing this is through the implementation of our rst health clinic, opening in November, with two more scheduled to open throughout the year. Through this initiative, bene t enrolled employees (and their families) will have
greater opportunities to save both time and money on their healthcare needs.
But we cannot ignore the other factors that attract and retain high quality employees. We are evaluating and re ning our hiring practices to ensure we have the best people working
with and for our students. We are developing a career ladder to create leadership opportunities for all employees. And, we are building principal capacity and professional development programs to equip all BPS employees to e ectively perform at their highest level.
We have a responsibility to ensure that our students are served by the highest quality sta we can employ and it is why we have developed detailed strategies and plans to ensure we do our part in this e ort. To learn more about our
employee excellence objectives, I would encourage you to view our entire strategic plan at www.brevardschools.org (click on About – Strategy Matters).
Finally, I want to thank every BPS employee for your tireless e orts to serve our students with excellence every day. You are what makes Brevard Public Schools great.
