Background: Abstract
Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) can affect pregnant women’s health and quality of
life. The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence of NVP of different severity
and associated factors among pregnant women in a tertiary-care hospital in Thailand.
Methods: Results: A total of 422 pregnant women were assessed for NVP severity using a pregnancy-unique
quantification of emesis and nausea (PUQE) scoring system. Knowledge on NVP of the
women were assessed using a 30-item questionnaire. Incidence of NVP of different
severities and knowledge level were estimated. Possible associated factors were evaluated.
Mean age was 30.9 years, 51.2% were nulliparous, and mean gestational age was 9.1 weeks.
According to the PUQE score, 70.6% had mild NVP, 28.2% had moderate NVP, and 1.2%
had severe NVP. A significant knowledge deficit and misconceptions regarding NVP was
observed. Mean knowledge score was 13.6 out of 30 and 66.6% had a score of ≤15. Those
with moderate to severe NVP were more likely to be <25 years (p=0.002), and effects of
NVP on life and work were also more pronounced (p<0.001). Women with lower knowledge
scores were more likely to be <25 years (p=0.002), to graduate lower than bachelor’s degree
(p<0.001), and to have lower family income (p=0.017).
Conclusions: Majority of the pregnant women had mild NVP. Younger women were at higher risk for
moderate to severe NVP and lower level of knowledge. Lower educational level and income
increased risk of lower knowledge on NVP. Knowledge on NVP needs to be improved which
might help in alleviating the symptoms of NVP, especially in high-risk group.
