Phunchai
Charatcharoenwitthaya, M.D.
Professor Phunchai Charatcharoenwitthaya is a distinguished faculty member in the Division of
Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. He
received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol
University in 1993, completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 1999, and pursued a clinical fellowship
in Gastroenterology from 2000 to 2001 at the same institution.
Expanding his academic and research horizons internationally, Dr. Charatcharoenwitthaya
completed a research fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA
(2005–2008), where he also earned a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with a focus on Clinical and
Translational Science.
Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Dr. Charatcharoenwitthaya has served
Siriraj Hospital in key academic roles, advancing from instructor to associate professor and currently a
full professor. He holds active memberships in several leading professional societies, including the Thai
Association for the Study of the Liver (THASL), the Gastroenterological Association of Thailand (GAT), the
American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases
(AASLD), the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), and the European Association
for the Study of the Liver (EASL). He is currently serving as President of the Thai Association for the Study
of the Liver.
Dr. Charatcharoenwitthaya has been recognized with numerous prestigious honors, including the
Outstanding Gastroenterologist Award from the Gastroenterological Association of Thailand (2022), the
Graduate Studies Alumni Award for Excellence in Academic/Research from Mahidol University (2023), the
Outstanding Academic Award from the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand (2024), and the Alumni
with Outstanding Achievements Award from the Siriraj Alumni Association under Royal Patronage (2025).
He has also been named a Mahidol University Top 1% Researcher (2023–2025) and one of the World’s
Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University (2023).
