ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW
29
A young breeder got his show season off to a great start
when Liam Swinnerton’s ram lamb caught the eye of Mary
Dunlop to go all the way to the top of the line up at the
Royal Highland Show.
Following on from a great sale season, it was a lamb of similar
breeding to Liam’s sale leaders – including the 20,000gns Lipley
Hugo Boss ET – that secured the Male then Supreme honours.
The January-born Lipley Jaguar is sired by the 12,000gns
Ardstewart Fred Flintstone shared with the Hackney and Wilodge
flocks, and bred from Woodies Eye Candy, a Bailey Brook CR7
daughter that was bought at the Beltex Beauties sale as a ewe
lamb.
It was a day for the lambs to shine as Pager Jinny ET from Paul
Tippetts and Gerwyn Jones’ newly formed flock claimed the
Female Championship before landing the Reserve Supreme
ticket. She is bred from one of the foundation females in the
flock, the Belvoir View Firefox-sired Corra Go Lightly, while her
sire is the 11,000gns Buckles Fury.
Buckles Fury in fact went on to stand Reserve Male for his
owners, the Ingram family, who purchased him at the Carlisle
Premier as a ram lamb to work in their Logie Durno Flock. He is
among a successful flush from Gyffin Dexter and the
Kingleodores Trojan-sired College Adele.
Just as lambs claimed the supreme honours, it was another
aged sheep that stood Reserve in the Female section in the
shape of Procters Fabulous from the Procters team brought out
by Jeff, Jen, Katie and Robbie Aiken. Her pedigree the Rathbone
Wallace-sired Procters Adele and Rathbone Desperado.
Among the shearlings, Grant Maxwell’s Faughhill Herbie – by
Kingledores Godzilla and out of Eildon Cameo – won the
shearling ram class while Andrew Morton headed up the 40-
strong gimmer class with Mortons Hiccup – another by
Ardstewart Fred Flintstone but out of Hackney Crisp.
Leading the way in the Group of Three was a trio from Alan
Miller’s Lurg flock.
The young team proved their enthusiasm for the sector as Finlay
Barclay stood at the top of an exceptionally strong Young
Handlers section to claim the Championship, and teamed up
with twin brother Cameron to win the NSA sheep dressing
competition too.
Over in the commercial section, John Messenger’s Beltex cross
gimmer by a Cuiltburn sire won the Championship while the
Morton family’s 46.5kg prime lambs by Gyffin Dexter were
Reserve.
