Another great year for the border club and its members. The year started off with the January Society Sale at Carlisle with club members Steve, Claire and Jo Pattinson selling Kelowna Pilot for 9,000gns Standing first in his class.
Also selling for 8,500gns was, Stonebyres Pavarotti. from Blair & Shona Comrie and, from the same stable and standing third in his class was, Stonebyres President who sold for 7,500gns. J C Walker & Son sold Brennand Prince for 7,000gns.
A fantastic trade for females, topped at 10,000gns for the last one through the ring, Top Side Respect from Ross & Elaine Pattinson. Standing Female Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion
In March the club held its Primestock Show and Sale at carlisLe with a great entry. The pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by RI Stamper Haulage Ltd and the Border Blue Club. Judging was carried out with skill and panache by Mr Morgan Helliwell, who awarded the first prize British Blue heifer consigned by Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm the Overall Champion, pipping the Limousin heifer to the post. She was by Osborne Harvey and out of a British Blue cross Limosuin dam. She later sold for 762kg, 280ppk or £2133 to the Judge. The first prize bullock was a Black bullock from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, which weighed 744kgs and sold to 253.5ppk or £1886 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.Taking the top spot in the cow class was Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres herd with a fantastic Blue Roan cow scaling 934kgs and sold to 249.5ppk or £2330 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.
Finally in a strong class of bulls the Top Side herd belonging to Ross & Elaine Pattinson, Temon Farm claimed the first prize with a Black and White bull selling for a centre record price of £3235, 301.5ppk for £1073kg to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs I McGarva, Nether Abbington Farm sold the 3rd prize bull for 947kg, 299.5ppk or £2836.
The May sale at Carlisle saw averages up on the year, with “Blues” still in great demand, with no fewer than nine selling for five-figure prices. Females were in particular demand, meeting a 92% clearance, with three selling at five-figure prices
Heading up the bull entry at 18,000gns early in the sale
was the second prize bull from the very first class, Brennand Panther from Jeff and Margaret Walker, from near Dunsop Bridge, Clitheroe, followed by Netherwood Pablo, at 14,000gns the Reserve Male Champion from Andrew Woodburn, Muirkirk, Ayrshire. Two sold for 10,500gns apiece including Garry Patterson’s Aultmore Powerhouse, and Solway View Popeye from kevin watret
A cracking run of heifers from Kevin Watret’s Solway View herd led the way in the female section, peaking at 16,000gns, 15,000gns and 13,000gns, with an embryo heifer calf also making 7500gns.
Averages: 19 senior bulls, £6737; 17 intermediate bulls, £6084; 20 junior bulls, £5891; overall, 56 bulls, £6236 (compared to 19 x senior, £9699; 44 x junior, 6646; overall, 63 x £7567 in 2021). One in-calf heifer, £4410; 18 senior heifers, £5670; 15 junior heifers, £4578; two embryo heifer calves, £5618; overall, 36 females, £5177 (39 x £4668).
The September sale saw a smaller entry but quality was still in demand, with a top price of 5,200gns was the sweet, stylish heifer, Knockagh Perky from the Ervine family, Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. She stood first in her class and went on to claim the Supreme Championship under Judge, Ali Jackson.
Standing Reserve Champion was the almost black bull, Almeley Pichon from Graham Morgan and family, Herefordshire. This mobile and well-muscled son of Pinnacle Hero was out of the homebred Almeley Lizzy and found a new home at 5,000gns with A & F Bailie, Newton Stewart.
Agri expo saw a cracking entry of calves from every exhibitor: -
