Leek and District Show I 29th July 2023
It was a pleasure to judge Leek Show, although it was slightly damp at times, there was a
decent turn out especially in the youngstock classes.
JUDGE: WENDY YOUNG
Heifer born in 2023 - I headed this class with a very eye
catching light roan calf and it was the style and presence
of this heifer and her ability to track that gave her the
advantage over the heifer in second. My second heifer
matched the first and had the advantage in maturity over
the very dairy baby calf in third.
Heifer born in 2022 - This class was led by a great boned
heifer of real dairy type and just edged into first for a little
more body depth over my second placed heifer, a heifer that
really matched the first well and was sweeter through the
bone than the heifer in third, 3 over 4 just displaying more
dairyness through the front end over a very correct heifer in
4th.
Heifer In Calf - The heifer heading this class carried a little
more condition than I usually go for but displayed very few
faults and I placed her over the second for more desirable
udder promise. 2 over 3 was for her openess and stretch and
3 over 4 for a cleaner more dairy heifer throughout.
Dry Cow - Only one animal in it but this white cow, with
a great barrel and good locomotion was displaying great
longevity.
Heifer In Milk - Only one forward again, but this dark roan
heifer was well balanced and displayed a good ligament
which helped her become overall Reserve Champion.
Cow in Milk - Again only one in the class, but it could
have stood more competition as this white second calver
displayed all the dairyness I was looking for, coupled with a
decent udder and went on to become breed Champion quite
easily.
Pairs - In the pairs class I went with the pair that matched
and had the most balance together over two very dairy
animals in second and it was there cleanliness throughout
that got them over my third placed pair.
