8000 litres on an organic, grazing
system, with excellent mammary and
correctness throughout.
We finished that day at James
Danforth’s Haydike herd. It was
fantastic to see the shorthorns in a
predominantly Holstein herd. There
were some very stylish heifers, with
Haydike Classy Red Diamond P living
up to her name and proving very
classy indeed!
The following day – still Yorkshire,
but working our way south, so West
Yorkshire now – we were treated to
the Fleetwood family’s Hutchinwood
herd. This was another very
consistent herd. Cows were milky
and long-lasting, exemplified by the
Sweetrose family – fantastic to see
a 15-year-old cow still going strong.
The Lemon Grove Belagio-sired
Sweetrose 43 was a superb example
of a senior cow with tremendous
frame and dairy quality.
We saw Ian and Wendy Collins’
Churchroyd herd in two parts as
the heifers are kept an hour away
from the main herd. The in-calf
heifer, Churchroyd Tulip was a well-
balanced, deep framed heifer, with
great locomotion. In the cows, we
were spoilt for choice with a herd of
exceptional, powerful, big framed,
milky cows. The Bronte Wildeyes
family were particularly impressive.
The twins, Bronte Wildeyes 62 and 63
were hard to separate, but 63 had the
edge over her sister for her overall
style, balance, and udder quality and
attachment. The senior cow, Bronte
Wildeyes 53, exuded milkiness, style
and presence. Some very covetable
cows here!
Alex Wilkes’ Kidstones herd, housed
at Churchroyd, provided more
evidence of the longevity of the
shorthorn breed, with Kidstones
Heather 5, a tall, deep-ribbed cow,
having nothing to prove coming with
her 8th calf.
On our final day we headed to
Nottinghamshire to see Chris
Hayward’s Hooton herd and
Jonathan Fisher’s Willoughby
herd. The Hooton Fair Appeal bull,
Hooton Red Rum, was an impressive,
stretchy bull with some excellent
milky offspring. His daughter,
Hooton Lily Fair 296 was just one of
the animals that really caught the
eye, a tall, powerful dairy cow. The
youngstock in the Willoughby herd
particularly impressed, showing
great promise with well-grown,
deep-framed heifers.
We travelled over a thousand miles
in one of the hottest weeks of the
year, visiting a dozen herds. We
enjoyed fantastic hospitality and saw
Dairy Shorthorns thriving in many
different farming systems.
It was a wonderful experience,
and I would like to thank all those
breeders who took part. It was a
privilege to see your herds and judge
your cattle.
