When you are working on a tight schedule, such a shorthand with peo- ple is fantastically helpful.”
There were many major lighting challenges for Lanser perhaps none more so than the hall in the Japanese palace (on a stage at Shepperton) where, he says, “Ken has asked to be able to shoot multiple 360 degree Steadicam shots both for day and night scenes.
“Tim Harvey had over 35 Japanese lanterns hanging in the set as well as cloth draped as ceiling pieces. This made it hard to light from above so we had to rely on soft light from the lanterns and hidden maps from the floor.”
The palace was also used for a Kabuki theatre performance as well as a Sumo wrestling ring which pits the distinctly slight Oyewelo against a rather heftier local favourite.
Says Lanser: “Ken wanted a Ring event ‘look’ so the people watching the match dropped off into darkness. This is where the Fujifilm stock is so excellent at maintaining velvety blacks while giving you a great expo- sure latitude.”
With Branagh firmly behind the camera this time, he assembled a remarkable Anglo-American cast including Kevin Kline (as “melancholy Jaques”), Bryce Dallas Howard, Brian Blessed (in dual roles), Romola Garai, Richard Briers, Alfred Molina and, in a particular inventive touch, a trio of black British actors – Adrian Lester, David Oyewelo and Jotham Annam - to play Oliver, Orlando and Jacques, the “de Boys boys”.
This is, suggests Branagh, “a dream of Japan,” of “Love and Nature in Disguise”. After all, as the Bard him- self reminds us in this very play: “All the world’s a stage.” ■ QUENTIN FALK
