EXPOSURE
W hether via film school, by way of the classic industry ladder or sim- ply self-taught, cameramen can spring from a variety of sources and in this issue of EXPOSURE we feature a great quartet all with a fascinating tale to tell. GAVIN FINNEY started out with a superb Oscar-winning student film at the NATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION SCHOOL while ALAN M. TROW needed a little help from a video store owner to ignite his career. JAMIE HARCOURT, son of a great operator, admits to a little spot of nepotism while the legendary DOUGLAS SLOCOMBE owes an early
debt of gratitude to the famous Ealing Studios. Mention of the NFTS and Ealing brings us neat- ly to our focus on this most prestigious film school which is busily preceding its planned move from Beaconsfield to West London with some ambitious curriculum plans for the immediate future under newly-appointed director STEPHEN BAYLY, an old boy of the school himself. The NFTS has had the benefit of Lottery funds along with PATHÉ PICTURES which we profile in the second of our series on the new British filmmaking franchises - or “mini-studios” as
they’ve been dubbed many times in the media. Back to more traditional studios with a glimpse of the past, present and the future of TWICKENHAM STUDIOS through the eyes of its current boss, award-
winning sound man GERRY HUMPHREYS. A favourite base of directors such as Lord Attenborough and Richard Lester, the studio, nestling near the banks of the Thames, has been hosting film productions for over 85 years and still clings to its famous repu- tation as “the club for industry professionals.”
We feature American TV star CALISTA FLOCKHART who despite her unforgettable name was unknown this side of the pond until her new television series on Channel 4 rocked the ratings and divided the critics. She tells us why she plays a character some audiences love to hate, but still watch in droves.
Putting the dream factory world of Ally McBeal in the shade has to be an ambitious and awe inspir- ing new co-production between the BBC and America’s highly respected PBS network. Called simply AFRICA, it consists of six different journeys by Henry Louis Gates Jr, an American journalist and academic, which should shed considerable light on that mighty land mass which is so often called, sometimes unjustly, the Dark Continent.
And just when you thought you’d heard the last of the World Cup for a while, our Cover Story focus is set firmly on WORLDMARK’s Tony Maylam as he reveals all about STRIKER!, his remarkable official film of the 1998 tournament in France. Plus 25 years of recording gurus MOLINARE; rising star CHRISTIAN BALE and a new French swashbuckler, LE BOSSU.
