This year the British Academy Television Craft Awards found the perfect home to celebrate the creative and technical talents of our indus- try – Sadler’s Wells. The red carpet was rolled out at the Islington theatre for an evening of glitz, glamour and generous doses of theatricality.
Liza Tarbuck hosted the evening and guest presenters included Samantha Bond, Michelle Collins, Robbie Coltrane, Alice Evans, David Harewood, Celia Imrie, Lennie James, Roy Marsden, Brian May, Dermot Murnaghan and Kevin Whately.
Longitude won three awards after a record-breaking eight nominations and BBC2 collected seven awards. A full list of winners appears alongside. In addi- tion to the 14 categories, including three new talent awards to recognise the importance of writing and direction, two Special Awards were presented.
The first of the evening went to World Productions and was collected by Liza Mellody, instrumental in the company’s developments in new media. Alan Yentob highlighted the achievements of Tony Garnett and the team at World responsible for produc- tions such as Between The Lines, Ballykissangel, The Cops and This Life.
He heralded Garnett as “the bold- est, the bravest and most creative of producers that British television has ever produced,” and praised the com- pany for “nurturing a whole new gener- ation of writers, actors and producers and its success in bringing new blood and new talent into the industry.
Cinematographer, Brian Tufano was rewarded for his remarkable career spanning film and television, including Common As Muck, Mr Wroe’s Virgins, Middlemarch, Silent Witness, East Is East, Trainspotting and Billy Elliot.
Stephen Daldry presented his friend and colleague with the award by speaking of “his inspiration, his imagi- nation and his care which are at the heart of all the films he’s made.” Filmed tributes included Ewan McGregor from the set of Black Hawk Down, currently filming in Morocco.
There were a number of disappear- ing acts throughout the evening! Floor manager Toby Baker lost his trousers
minutes before the ceremony started. They mysteriously re-appeared by the mannequins bedecked in the costumes of the four nominat- ed designers.
The Media Guardian website ran with the story of the missing table centres. “Irate BAFTA officials pursuing monkey-suited guests attempt- ing to exit with flower-tastic table decorations under their arms. No mean feat of kleptomania, given that said flower arrangements were in fact contained within large, red glass bowls.”
Thank you to all our sponsors – BBC Talent, Colour Film Services, Future Film Group, Granada Media, Kodak Entertainment Imaging, Sebastian McLean International, The Stage Newspaper - and a particular thank you to Hilary Bevan Jones and Kenith Trodd for their generous support and creative input. ■
