An interview with Alex Thomson BSC
 W hen Alex Thomson won last year’s BSC Cinematography
Award for his work on Kenneth Branagh’s star-studded, wide-screen Hamlet, there was a very neat kind of symmetry about the final destination of this much-deserved glittering prize.
For the last time Thomson had worked in 70mm was as a second camera operator on David Lean’s Lawrence Of Arabia, which was principally lit by Freddie Young. And fifteen years before that, in 1947, he’d made his film ‘debut’ as a clapper loader for Young on So Well Remembered, a long-forgotten
British potboiler about ‘trouble ‘t mill’.
