and beyond Technicolor celebrates a remarkable film industry anniversary
echnicolor is one of the most recognisable brand names of all time in the entertainment world. For film crews flying in and out of Heathrow Airport, the imposing chimney at West
Drayton has, since the 1930s, appeared a familiar and comforting landmark.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice even helped strengthen the appeal of the brand name with the title of one of their most popular musi- cals, Joseph And His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
This year Technicolor celebrates its 90th anniversary. The company will mark the occasion with a lunch for 300 invitees at the Cannes Film Festival.
Its now owned by Thomson of France, who invested £5 million to upgrade its state of the art Digital Intermediate operation at West Drayton and its new Creative Services headquarters at Perivale.
The new DI facility boasts Scanning, Online, Grading, De-spot and Film recording. These facilities are combined with the laboratory’s Answer - Print, Inter-positive,
Internegative and check print services to provide a truly film centric facility.
Incumbent producers and direc- tors include Ridley Scott, Garth Jennings and Woody Allen, while Jack Cardiff has been restoring his Oscar- winning The Black Narcissus for Granada International. Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and Ridley Scott’s Kingdom Of Heaven extensively used Technicolor’s digital expertise. Upcoming work includes the fourth Harry Potter, the new Batman and V For Vendetta, amongst many other projects.
