The Orange British Academy Film Awards Nominations 2002
There’s British interest in almost all of the main international categories in this year’s film nominations, from performance and direction to writing as well as across the gamut of craft.
Actors Michael Caine (The Quiet American), Daniel Day- Lewis (Gangs of New York), Alfred Molina (Frida) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago), writers David Hare (The Hours), Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things), Peter Mullan (The Magdalene Sisters) and Ronald Harwood (The Pianist) along with director Stephen Daldry (The Hours) are all in contention on February 23.
Jointly leading the way with 12 nominations each are Martin Scorsese’s Gangs Of New York and Rob Marshall’s musical Chicago. The Hours has 11 nomi- nations followed by Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (nine) and Polanski’s The Pianist (seven).
The familiar ‘two chances’ motif is much in evidence with Meryl Streep nominated in both actress categories for, respective- ly, The Hours and Adaptation. Lord Of The Rings master Peter Jackson is back in the frame again as producer and director, a double he won last year, while Stephen Daldry, Peter Mullan and Asif Kapadia also have two shots at trophies.
The shortlist for the Orange Film of the Year, for the ten most popular films of 2002, is Monsters Inc. Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets, Spider- Man, Ocean’s 11, Austin Powers In Goldmember, Men in Black II, Scooby Doo, The Lord of the Rings:The Two Towers and Die Another Day.
The Academy will bestow further Awards dedicated to excellence in film at the ceremony. These include The Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and the Fellowship.
Hosted at The Odeon, Leicester Square by Stephen Fry, the awards will be broadcast on BBC 1 and produced for the fourth time by Initial (part of Endemol UK).
