Welcome to our last issue of the 20th Century! And what better way to mark the moment than with a Cover Story on one of the long-awaited Millennium Dome’s most eagerly-anticipated attrac- tions - a new, specially-commis- sioned 70mm Blackadder time-travel comedy to be shown hourly from January 1, 2000 in Sky’s state- of-the-art twin auditoria at Greenwich. Starring Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson, alias Edmund and Baldrick, BLACKADDER BACK AND FORTH re-unites all the old team as you’ve never seen them before.
Almost as époque-making is the BBC’s new £10 million adaptation of Mervyn Peake’s epic fan- tasy GORMENGHAST, scheduled to be aired across four hours from January. We talk to director Andy Wilson who has done what Hollywood failed to do and turn an authentic literary masterpiece into screen reality after a love affair with the source material which began in the 70s when he first read the book as a 15-year-old.
More tales from Behind The Camera with a trio of interviews covering everything from features and television to ads and pop promos. Aussie-born PETER HANNAN BSC, whose introduction to the British film industry was on 2001- A Space Odyssey, is already ensured a place in cult heaven as cinematographer on Withnail And I. This year he lit Milk and Channel 4’s major Millennium offering Longitude. Until the right feature comes along film school graduate ALESSANDRA SCHERILLO, who originally hails from Verona, is more than happy to develop her growing reputation lighting classy commercials.
Like Hannan, HENRY BRAHAM BSC moves seam- lessly between movies and commercials, but follow- ing his work on films like The Land Girls, Waking Ned and, most recently, The Invisible Circus, he’s likely to become one of the most in-demand British feature cameramen over the next few years.
Talking of cinematography, we also pay tribute to the BSC and all its great work at the end of this, its Golden Anniversary year. Onwards and upwards.
Non-stop Fuji-stocked production over the past 12 months is reflected in tales of two very different projects. KEVIN AND PERRY, which began life as a reg- ular sketch on the Beeb’s comedy series Harry Enfield And His Humorous Chums, has been spun off into a cinema feature with Enfield and Kathy Burke turning teenage angst into a fine art as they travel to Ibiza. Children of a younger age are the tar- get for ITV’s DREAM STREET, now shooting its third and fourth series at Pinewood. See it to believe it.
To Ireland where we visit idyllic ARDMORE STUDIOS, which has played host to great movies for more than 40 years from The Blue Max and Excalibur to My Left Foot and Angela’s Ashes. As the industry awaits a Government decision whether to prolong long-term crucial tax incentives, there are interviews with two of the country’s most influential film folk, producer MORGAN O’SULLIVAN of World 2000 and Official Film Censor, SHEAMUS SMITH who have both, in their own time, also run the Ardmore com- plex.
All this plus a look at year-old broadcast facili- ties company 2 + 1; the well deserved winners of the prestigious annual 1999 FUJIFILM SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS and a Royal Premiere for THE TROOP attended by The
