Industry personalities hand out their very own BAFTAs
   Best Old Documentary
(that’s still great now!)
No film has endured quite like Nightmail (GPO Unit 1936). How can you beat a combination of music by Benjamin Britten, poems by WH Auden and the thrilling and evocative filming of steam trains thundering across the screen. It’s a film that has entered the national consciousness; peo- ple remember snatches of it, like a half forgotten dream. “This is the night train crossing the bor- der...” With Basil Wright and Grierson... how could it fail!
Oldest Enduring Film Gauge
35mm should get this award of course, of course, it was invented in 1894 and still going strong... but this year the award goes to 9.5mm. Amazing through it seems, this quirky gauge with the sprocket holes down the middle instead the sides, is still in produc- tion and enthusiasts still shoot on it. They swear it’s as good as 16mm, and although the projec- tors are hard to find, a number of facilities will telecine it.
Best Cinema In London
The Odeon, Leicester Square. Art Deco styling, tiger print seats and an organ that still rises up out of the floor.
Best Film Lab
For archive work, it has to be Hendersons, an old fashioned place where black and white shrunken film holds no fear. The technicians are unfazed when you hand in a dripping, mouldy steaming roll of flammable nitrate celluloid and they hand back a brand new negative as if it was shot yesterday, well, most of the time they do.
Most Puzzling Film
History Mystery
Just what did happen to Louis Le Prince, so nearly inventor of the cinema of the 1880’s. He board- ed that train in Dijon, France, and disappeared, along with his new moving pictures device. He was convinced that it was going to be great entertainment and might just be an interesting career for a few people.
Least-liked Question
To An Archivist
“Yeah, those films sound great, but have you got them in Colour?”
Amanda Huntley is Managing Director of Huntley Film Archives, founded by her father John Huntley. The archive now holds over 60,000 old documentary and feature films dating 1895 to the 1980’s from all around the world. They are preserved and cata- logued and made available through their website: www.huntleyarchives.com
