FAR FROMTHE MADDING CROWD
            BAFTA CYMRU
BAFTA SCOTLAND
SHOWCASE WALES - the best of Welsh media on show in the Big Smoke held on March 1 - proved a resounding success. The selected screenings of recent works from the
animation, drama
and documentary sectors showed to capacity audi- ences, and the New Media Exhibition held throughout the day proved of ines- timable value to the 16 companies from the Principality who attended.
The Showcase
proved its value taking our best talent and productions to the doorstep of our intended audi- ence at the heart of the UK media industry. It was also extremely significant as the first promotional event for our national audiovisual industry in the capital drawing together the forces of all our broadcasters and media organisations. Our gratitude goes out to the Council and staff of BAFTA UK whose generosity and energies helped us pull the whole thing off.
On March 8, Welsh members enjoyed an evening with veteran broadcaster Gwyn Erfyl. Gwyn, now in his seventies was one of the guiding lights in the creation of HTV and still enjoys a tremen- dous reputation for the power and quality of his current affairs
and documentaries, which were on show at Chapter Arts Centre that night.
This was followed by an evening with Madhur Jaffrey, who visited Cardiff on March 14
Madoc, attended workshops on dubbing and on- and off-line editing and saw the results of their labours in a special cast and crew screening. A further A & B workshop on the soft skills
of the sector, regarding wardrobe and styling, is also currently in the pipeline in collaboration with sponsors Bauhaus and Howells of Cardiff.
At our back however
the winged chariot of the BAFTA Cymru
2000 Awards keeps hurrying near. Voting books went out on March 14 and we hope to call juries in mid April. The Ceremony will be held in Cardiff on June 3 and preparations are already heating up, with Stifyn Parri as producer promising more than just a reprise of his original work at the first Ceremony in 1991.
In this our 10th Anniversary we expect a lot! Category defini- tions have been rigorously updated and new awards intro- duced for Best Promo, Best New Media and Best Newcomer amongst others. All fur-
ther developments will be posted on our Website. ■

Following the great success of our New Talent Awards last November, we’re now busy with plans for future events. Since the start of this year we’ve screened many BAFTA and Oscar nominated films to our membership, and we are also working hard on ideas to increase our profile across Scotland.
On St Valentine’s Day we hosted a special
screening of Born
Romantic in
Edinburgh which was attended by its Scottish writer- director David Kane.
In the midst of
our weekly screen-
ings, we joined with
Scottish Screen
recently to host a
special screening
and reception for
the New Talent Award-winning film One Life Stand. The digital- ly-produced film has won recog- nition at festivals all over the world and gained four NTAs along with Scottish Screen’s spe- cial prize for innovation.
The Production Show, staged at Olympia from March 13-15, is the backdrop
for the Scottish Screen Industries reception
nity for screenings, seminars and other promotional events ending up with an evening party.
This year also sees the return of BAFTA Scotland’s mainstream Film & Television Awards which are scheduled to take place in November. Watch this space for more details. ■ Alison Forsythe

She was also deft in fielding questions from the audience as to why their dhosas don’t rise. At the time of writing, prepara- tions are also in hand for a comic benefit night for BAFTA at the newly opened Glee Club in Cardiff Bay, which will be held on April 12.
BAFTA Cymru’s partner- ship with Arts & Business also reached a new fruition with the completion of the shadow- ing project facilitated by us with sponsors Carlyle Insurance Brokers and leading drama production company Fiction Factory.
