This issue looks forward to a long and timelessly warm summer with a Cover Story devoted to an ambitious new Channel 4 production. A £5.5 million, four-hour adaptation by acclaimed director Charles Sturridge of Dava Sobel’s recent bestseller LONGITUDE, which spans a two century obsession with time. Co-starring Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons, it was shot on Fuji by Peter Hannan BSC and is like- ly to be transmitted over two consecutive nights in December just prior to the new millennium.
Our regular Behind The Camera profiles again span a wide range of age and experience in the world of cinematography. Oscar-winning BILLY WILLIAMS BSC is now helping a new generation of cameramen benefit from his skill and knowledge. He teaches students regularly at the National Film & Television School in Beaconsfield as well as at student workshops in the US, Ireland and Europe. PETER ALLWORK BSC is another remarkable veteran whose name has become synonymous with spec- tacular aerial work on such modern classic films as Aces High, Out Of Africa and Braveheart.
At 33, RICHARD TERRY is a comparative new- comer who got his first break working under con- tract at Ealing Studios. He has now completed Wonderland and Brothers, two small-budget films shot, respectively, in India and Greece. JOHN WARD writes about the excitement and potential perils of shooting Final Cut, a new feature he recently lit on a tight schedule and an improvised script.
We focus on two studios, BRAY, deep in leafy Berkshire and once the home of Hammer, where after a long period of uncertainty, the future now happily seems assured and LEAVESDEN, which only began its studio life after years of aircraft manu- facture in 1995 thanks to the Bond producers who leased the old Rolls Royce factory to shoot Goldeneye. Leavesden has since played host to a succession of big-budget movies including Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace and Tim Burton’s upcoming fantasy Sleepy Hollow.
Burton’s new biggie is also cited as one of the success stories of the LONDON FILM COMMISSION which as well as facilitating the production of films shooting in the capital also boasts an invaluable, and, constantly growing, database of buildings, locations, equipment and crew CVs. We will be doing regular features on the various regional film commissions that have sprung up all over the UK.
The rapidly evolving world of satellite and multi-channel television broadcasting comes into sharp focus with success stories FLEXTECH and WIZJA TV. Flextech is the leading supplier of basic tier channels to the UK Pay-TV market whereas satellite broadcaster Wizja TV brings 22 digitally broadcast channels direct to TV-hungry Poland.
We’re on location with two time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn who’s starring in a new comedy SAVING GRACE, shot on Fuji, about unconventional ways of raising cash. And finally, a glance back at the recent Cannes Film Festival where money is the motive and movie-stars attempt to eclipse the sun! ■
