his Is England’s Thomas Turgoose stars alongside Holliday Grainger, Rafe Spall, Susan Lynch and Steven Mackintosh in the first feature
from director Tom Harper and Skins writer Jack Thorne.
The Scouting Book For Boys
follows young David (Turgoose) who lives with his friend Emily (Grainger) on a caravan park on the Norfolk coast. Rocked by the news that she has to move away with her father, David helps Emily to hide out in a remote seaside cave. But as their secret becomes more complicated, David’s world begins to transform in ways he never imagined.
Harper, 29, who previously directed the acclaimed shorts Cubs and Cherries, read the first draft of Thorne’s script and fell in love with it straight away.
“From page one it pulled me in, and kept me guessing right through to the very end. There are surprises round about every corner, and the surprises get bigger and bigger. It’s essentially a love story with two incredibly endearing central characters - but then I think it turns into something that is darker and perhaps more interesting, a slightly unconventional thriller.
“I hope that it’s a British film that does things slightly differently, and therefore it’s unlike a lot of the films that are currently around in the marketplace. It has a degree of magic and of beauty to it that is appealing, at the same time as having a really strong emotional centre that is ultimately heartbreaking. Although the story is set in a world that in one sense could be really bleak, it’s not, because even though some of the characters are a bit rubbish, or crap, or do bad things, there’s always a human quality and a human warmth to them that I find really appealing, and that keeps me interested.”

We did stock tests for the
interior cave [built in a studio] “and we ended up mixing ETERNA 250D for daytime interiors and night firelight scenes for an extra rich look, then we used ETERNA 400T for moonlight scenes.
There was a big pool of water that David (Turgoose) had to crawl through to get into the main cave so I used that as a reflective source to create light refractions on the cave walls.
Also the tricky bit was matching the exterior entrance of the cave in Hunstanton beach in Norfolk with the interior cave in the studio. This was a mix of overexposure for exterior light and good production design on
the cave textures. I hope you
don’t notice the difference!
