T his is a special Fujifilm DVD disc edition of EXPOSURE. The DVD contains the com-
plete portfolio of demonstration films for all of Fujifilm Super F-Series Motion Picture film stocks, plus technical specifi- cation modules, DP comments and direc- tor's commentary. The disc also contains
infomercials from associates Quantel (Generation Q), JVC (D-ILA projection), Stream (DVD production), Apple Solution Specialist (New Media Research) and Glory Film Co (producer of the demos for the F-500, F-250/F- 250D, and Reala 500D filmstocks). Filmmaker MARCUS DILLISTONE explains how he put the DVD together.
Our trio of Behind The Camera interviews takes us from a high-rise car park in Gateshead to the loca- tion of a new Anglo-French co-production which has just finished shooting in Brussels. In between we stop off in Liverpool to meet ANTHONY DOD MANTLE DFF, one of the world’s leading DV cameramen, who is relishing a rare bout with film on Danny Boyle’s latest, Millions. Dod Mantle, who went the digital video route with Boyle on the acclaimed apocalyptic thriller, 28 Days Later, is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Dogma directors Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) and Lars von Trier (Dogville).
Meanwhile, back in the North East, Swedish-born MATTIAS NYBERG recently completed an art film for director Runa Islam in a famous car park which film buffs will recognise from the 1971 cult classic Get Carter. Nyberg was a Fuji Scholarship Award winner in 1999 and has since gone on to work on shorts, docu- mentaries and, despite a fear of heights, a Turner Prize short-listed entry which was filmed while hanging from a crane nearly 700 feet up above Canary Wharf.
To Belgium where we catch up with distinguished French cinematographer JEAN-FRANCOIS ROBIN who has been lighting Pour Le Plaisir for award-winning Flanders filmmaker Dominique Deruderre. Their third collabora- tion, the film co-stars Samuel Le Bihan, Cecile Cassel and Francois Berléand. Since 1974 Robin has worked with many major directors including Patrice Leconte, Alain Tanner, Jean-Jacques Beineix, Jacques Demy, Jacques Deray, Mike Figgis, Philippe de Broca and John Duigan.
Closer to home we find DP Paul Englefield in the leafy Home Counties enjoying his big television ‘break’ on ROSEMARY & THYME, ITV’s new six-episode Sunday night mystery series starring Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris as a pair of sleuthing garden- ers. As another series of BBC’s award-winning SPOOKS has come to an end, DPs Sue Gibson BSC and Adam Suschitzky reflect on the lighting chal- lenges second time round.
First-time feature director Ric Cantor and double BAFTA-winning DP Daf Hobson BSC report on the filming of a new North London-set romantic comedy, SUZIE GOLD, starring Summer Phoenix, Leo Gregory and veteran actress Miriam Karlin. We also get the lowdown on producer-director Maikl Hap’s SHOOTOUT, about a group of young filmmakers on the first day of their new film, to be premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
TECHNICOLOR CREATIVE SERVICES UK was launched 18 months ago when it acquired Vidfilm International Digital. Roger Beck, managing director at Vidfilm, has now been running the new company for exactly a year and talks about its “complete value chain.” Geoff Poole, from a venerable film industry family, has been at the helm of THE EDITPOOL for 15 years arguing that “small is beautiful” as his Soho-based outfit handles everything from trailers, TV spots and promos to jun- kets, EPKs and premieres. Based at a converted church off the Fulham Road, THE LONDON FILM ACADEMY first opened it doors for film school business a year and a half ago. Its Principal, Daisy Gili, says the ‘blood, sweat... and tears” have all been worthwhile as the one-year course gets established.
All this plus COMMERCIAL BREAK on a BSkyB Sports Promotion, a rare outing for black-and-white film stock in the cause of bespoke tailoring, a report and pictures from a successful Fuji-sponsored golf day and some thoughts by award-winning Canadian cinematographer Paul Sarossy on MR IN-BETWEEN, his British feature directing debut. ■
