Hero TWakes TAPS Top Prize
riter/director Paul Whittington won the pres- tigious Fujifilm Completed Short Film Award, at the recent Fourth Annual
TAPS Writer of the Year Awards, for his film Hero.
The film features a young soldier returning from the Falklands’ war trau- matised by the experience and its effect on his family. Richard Pun pre- sented Paul with the Bronze Award, a cheque for £500 and 10 rolls of Fujicolor motion picture negative for his next film.
Other TAPS award winners were: Khurram Longi for On Me Head Beta (Drama), John Nathan and Gavin Tranter for Marcel (Comedy) and Roger Davison for The Prodigal Sons (Short).
Presenting a Special Award and a Fuji digital camera to Jill James, Executive Director and Founder of TAPS, to mark her 10 years of running the scheme, guest of honour Lynda La Plante said: “I’ve seen some amaz- ing and original talent here today. TAPS does a fantastic job looking after new writers. I wish all of them great success.” ■

Awards All The Way
Fuji scored a notable double at this year’s British Academy Television Awards with Shackleton (DP Henry Braham BSC) and Spooks (DP Sue
Gibson BSC).
Shackleton was named Best Drama
Serial and Spooks, Best Drama Series, at the prestigious annual event held at the London Palladium on April 13.
In addition, The Gathering Storm (DP Peter Hannan BSC), also originated on Fuji, was recognised with the Best Actor Award to Albert Finney. This followed up its success at the 69th Golden Globes earlier this year when Finney and the programme were both named Best Of in the Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made For Television categories.
Meanwhile, back at the BAFTAs, the Fuji-originatedTheBookGroup (DP Danny Cohen) was nominated in the cat- egory of Best Situation Comedy.
The BAFTA Craft Awards will be handed out on May 11 and among the four nominations for Shackleton is one for Henry Braham’s cinematography. The Gathering Storm, Spooks and Dinotopia (DP Tony Pierce Roberts BSC) are also among those cited.
