The commercial is set at the beach on a sunny day. A cou- ple of lads run down to the surf and find that the sea is covered in porridge, with a
whale stuck in the middle of it.
With the aid of the Skips they man-
age magically to change the sea back “into water, and banish The Wizard of
We had these pumps within it to make it look like it was bubbling. The odd thing is that everyone’s idea of what porridge should look like is dif- ferent so it took two days to come up with something that everyone was happy with.
The whale itself was animated by CGI so that was put in after we shot all the porridge. We had a little sponge whale so we could see where he would be. Then we set about shooting the helicopter and the other elements. The helicopter just flies above the por- ridge, against blue screen. We had a separate rig creating shadows so it made it look like the helicopter was flying through clouds.
It’s all very subtle. The commercial is very short, after all. But all these things give the impression of move-
ment so it looks like it’s flying around and not stuck on a pole in a studio.
We shot all that and then we had this huge beach set built at Magic Eye in Wandsworth. Loose Moose have a CGI department and
they put the sky in and made the flags on the beach houses flutter. Little things that help give it life. ■

Ken Lidster also animated it and he manipulated the helicopter and the puppet within it. We used the motion control rig to make it look like it’s swooping all over the place. For the boys, we used model anima- tion; we also had some CGI elements and the porridge itself was shot as live action.
