A lthough the name might be new in the British facilities business, there will be many working at its multi-million pound refur- bished site in Camden who will be extremely familiar to Exposure readers. Todd-AO UK brings together two established brand lead- ers from different areas of post production, who now provide a unique range of service
unmatched anywhere in the UK.
Chrysalis Television Facilities, operat-
ing since the 1980’s, has a reputation as a market leader in transmission and video post production services. Filmatic has a sixty-year history of quality film.
Now they are together at Hawley Crescent, which has undergone a massive transformation to meet the growing demands of film and television productions in this country and the rest of Europe.
The move marks the American Todd-AO Corporation’s intention to strengthen its influence in the global market by develop- ing its business beyond the USA.
Transmission playout, video editing and duplication continue at Camden, with TNT Classic Movies and cartoon Network, VH1- Germany, the BBC, Chrysalis Sport and Freemantle among regular clients.
However, the construction of laborato- ries to accommodate Filmatic’s move from Notting Hill brings a new dimension.
Graham Hall, managing director of Todd-AO UK, explains: “Expansion allows programme makers to undertake all post production work without leaving the build- ing arriving with rushes on film or tape, and producing a completed programme which can be broadcast via cable, satellite or the ITV Network, from the same site.
“The integration of film services also means that - for the first time - Todd-AO UK
will compete in the 16mm and 35mm fea- ture film, drama and commercials markets. “The film processing business has been
brought in line with the accepted practice in video post production, where you must be able to react urgently to delivery dead- lines required by your clients. we aim to provide a 24 hours a day service whenever required, making Todd-AO UK the most flexible operation in London.
“The market for facilities is competitive and program makers want quality, efficien- cy and understanding - at the right price. We pride ourselves on the reputation we already have in delivering all of these requirements.
“We also believe that building partner- ships with our clients, both now and in the future, is crucially important. We are com- mitted to not only giving them what they want, but also to discussing and explaining the best way to achieve their aims.
“We have some of the most experienced and highly rated operators in all the ser- vices we provide, and our clients regularly return with more business, which is in itself an endorsement of our professionalism.”
Worldwide, the Todd-AO Corporation’s reputation for quality and innovation is also a great endorsement for the new company.
To date they have won 11 Oscars for best Sound, seven more for technical achievement and 19 Emmys for work on television programming worldwide.
The films which have won Best Sound Oscars to date are: Apollo 13, Last of The Mohicans, Out of Africa, E.T. - The Extra- Terrestrial, The Exorcist, Cabaret, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, The Alamo, South Pacific and Oklahoma.
