3-D DESIGN
Our Interactive strand of events continued with New Dimensions: 3D Design for Games & TV in association with 3D World. Computer games are massively important in youth culture, but the game-playing lifestyle has led to more than a mere increase in games industry profits. The graphical styling and digital characters seen in video games are moving to TV screens, as producers strive to reach a youth audience.
At the same time, to reach mass markets, games developers rely heavily on television-style pre- sentation to give their 3D games the kind of production standards the MTV generation is used to.
This seminar examined both converging trends. Peter Scott, Head of Impossible TV, discussed how programmes like Channel 5’s TooMuchTV have employed 3D characters and sets and the game side was represented by Simon Prytherch, producer of Codemaster’s LMA Manager.
This football management game relies heavily on television for its production styles – right down to the inclusion of a Sky Sports-style news centre. As with TooMuchTV, the creative processes behind the production were revealed.
CAUSE AND EFFECTS
Digitally enhanced images was a feature of another event in July - Doctors Of Film: The Art of Visual Effects. Simon Frame, former- ly of Men In White Coats and now Men From Mars gave a special presentation about the work he does. Having been
responsible for visual effects in films such as Lost In Space, Deep Blue Sea and Elizabeth, Simon was well positioned to talk about the diverse nature of digital effects.
The technical genius that creates crowds of thousands, balls of fire, violent storms and massive explosions can also assist in other much less obvi- ous visual effects, such as the seamless removal of an unwant- ed actor in a scene.
With the aid of slides and a showreel, Simon outlined the capabilities and limitations of visual effects, giving an infor- mative and fascinating presen- tation that illustrated the seam- lessness and uniqueness of the work he does. After the presen- tation, director Julien Temple and Simon discussed their work with digital effects and were part of an audience Q&A.
Julian and Simon had worked together on Julian’s film Pandaemonium but Julian start- ed out by proclaiming that visu- al effects should only be used as a last resort! A self-confessed traditionalist, he prefers to pre- sent in films the actual shoot rather than digitally enhance the work retrospectively. Simon admitted that in certain areas he was aware that digital effects were not required and revealed that he eschewed dominating films with effects as he was very much drama-led.
However this work can dra- matically assist directors in the editing process – whether removing actors from scenes, scratches in the film or adding polar bears to the landscape! The Q&A session led both panel- lists to agree that this technolo- gy exists to enhance directors’ work, but it must be used with skill and judgement.
SELLERS MARKET
July was also the 20th anniver- sary of the death of one of the greatest comic actors of all time and as a special tribute we staged Sellers Unknown: Peter Sellers Remembered in conjunc- tion with the

Society. Sellers
Unknown is a
brand new doc-
umentary
about the life and work of Peter Sellers and features interviews with many of his friends and col- leagues. It has already been aired in the US, receiving excellent reviews, and is due for transmis- sion on ITV in the autumn.
The programme's producer John Scheinfeld, flew over from the States to introduce the docu- mentary and, together with UK based consultant Adrian Rigelsford, answered audience questions after the screening. After a screening of some of Peter's commercials directed by Joe McGrath, Maxine Ventham, Chair of PSAS, interviewed Peter's old associates: David Lodge, Joe McGrath and Burt Kwouk.
The three men relayed anec- dotes about their respective rela- tionships with Peter and paid tribute to their friend before answering audience questions. Much of the audience consisted not only of Sellers aficionados but also colleagues and friends of the talented man who had come to pay tribute, in addition to members of the Sellers family, including Peter's son Michael. ■
