riter-director Poliakoff’s Wfirst cinema feature for 10
years is a thriller about family secrets, betrayal and murder set in London and
the idyllic Norfolk countryside when Britain stands on the brink of war.
The story is centred around the formidable Keyes clan, who are determined to preserve their very traditional, English way of life in the midst of political uncertainty, with Nazi appeasers on one side and warmongers, determined to combat the German threat, on the other.
The all-star cast includes Romola Garai, Bill Nighy, David Tennant, Julie
Christie, Hugh Bonneville, Juno Temple, Christopher Lee, Jeremy Northam, Eddie Redmayne and Jenny Agutter.
According to cinematographer Danny Cohen BSC, re-united with Poliakoff for the fourth time following their TV films together, Joe’s Palace, Capturing Mary and A Real Summer: “Originally we were going to shoot before the clocks went back but because of cast availability among other things, the film got pushed.
“That gave us an interesting conundrum because it would generally get dark around 4pm so
scheduling was particularly crucial. If you knew the light’s going from about half past three, then you had to make sure you’d have something to do after that.”
Apart from some shooting at various locations in London, including Somerset House, the principal base was at Walsingham Abbey in North Norfolk, which had never been used before for filming.
Explained location manager Harriet Lawrence: “Some of the house dates back to the 12th Century built around the ruins of the medieval priory and has been in the present owner’s family since the
