Victoria Mather’s
six of
the best
Industry personalities hand out their very own BAFTAs
   Best Film
Gone With The Wind. The ultimate comfort film for rainy winter after- noons, I remember when I first saw it at the age of 10 in the Queen’s cinema in Gibraltar, into which I was carried by my older brother. I had had rheumatic fever and couldn’t walk, and the film was the first treat after months in bed. I’d like to have Tara’s theme played at my funer- al – what could be more appro- priate than for one’s ashes to be gone with the wind?
Best Singer
The late Elisabeth Welch who died recently aged 99, although she firmly clung to the belief that she was 75. It was in Glasgow, where she was engaged to sing to 2000 pensioners, that she looked down from the stage over the sea of little white-haired heads and said “I’ve never sung to a cotton field before.”
Best TV Programme
Dad’s Army. It reassures that there’ll always be an England, and has some of the finest comic writing. “Don’t panic, Captain Mainwaring” is a family mantra.
Best Radio Performer
Ned Sherrin. I have been lucky enough to work with him on Radio 4’s Loose Ends since 1986 and his professionalism is awe- some. He has always read the book, seen the play, the movie, before interviewing the author, the star or the director. This is not common practice amongst broadcasters any more, who seem to depend on cheeky chappie sloppiness.
Best Film Critic
Alexander Walker is irreplace- able. New York had Pauline Kael, London had Alex with his trench- ant, fearless opinions, always informed by knowledge and a deep commitment to the excel- lence of film in all its forms. The reason he was a brilliant critic was because he was primarily a journalist, always looking for a story, and he loved mischief. He was bold and spoke and wrote in words everyone could under- stand, that were compulsively readable, yet with the formidable intelligence and knowledge that made him the only critic of whom filmmakers were frightened.
Best Film Comedy
So difficult. I just adore Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, but A Fish Called Wanda lives in the memory. Cleese at his best, utilising every facet of the best traditions of film comedy, the alchemy of Kevin Kline’s Oscar-winning, very physi- cal performance, and the squashed Yorkshire terriers.
