O scar and BAFTA-winning American actress Renée Zellweger has twice
memorably recreated a very British, and contemporary, literary heroine. Now, after playing the noted diarist Bridget Jones in a pair of box-office hit comedies, Zellweger has taken on the
mantle of one of our greatest authors, children’s favourite Beatrix Potter. Our Cover shot is a sneak preview of her in MISS POTTER, which will open in the UK on January 5. In the film, she co-stars with Ewan McGregor and there will be a full report on the making of this much-awaited true-life romantic drama in the next issue of EXPOSURE.
Between them, cinematographers Garry Turnbull and CRIGHTON BONE have certainly chalked up some air miles in pursuit of their chosen profes- sion. In the first of our Behind the Camera profiles, Scots-born Turnbull talks about feature filmmaking in Turkey and Lebanon as well as giving the low- down on his latest project, THE BOY BITTEN, a music video unusually filmed on Super 16mm anamorphic and in black-and-white. It’s a bit of a dream come true for the DP who cites Fellini’s classic La Dolce Vita as his favourite film ‘look’.
New Zealander Bone, 37, cut his teeth on documentaries, promos, and short film spoofs like Ant Muzak and World Of Wrestling before graduat- ing to features last year, working on a number of projects including a risqué comedy, Stephen Surjik’s I Want Candy, featuring Hollywood beauty Carmen Elektra as a “porn legend” rocking the world of a couple of callow film students. Meanwhile, the very experienced Barry Ackroyd BSC reveals some of the secrets behind the making of UNITED 93, one of the year’s most acclaimed and controversial films which, many claim, will be the ‘smart money’ for nominations both sides of the Atlantic next awards season.
Two more new British films, STARTER FOR TEN and DRIVING LESSONS, are also being talked about as major award contenders and both feature directing debuts. Starter For Ten – an expression familiar to anyone who knows and loves TV’s long-running

University Challenge – adapted from his own bestseller by David Nicholls, sees the writer re- uniting with his Cold Feet director, Tom Vaughan, in a ‘coming of age’ college tale starring James McAvoy, Alice Eve and Rebecca Hall. Jeremy Brock, who wrote the 1997 hit Mrs Brown, has used a large element of autobiography in Driving Lessons, his own ‘rites of passage’ story featuring Julie Walters, Laura Linney and Rupert Grint.
It’s been a very busy past few months on film and television sets as Britain basked in a heat- wave. To racing stables off the M42 where a horsey episode in the 11th series of BBC’s popular DALZIEL & PASCOE, with Warren Clarke and Colin Buchanan, unfolded under the watchful eye of DP Peter Thornton. Due West, and in the Monmouthshire village of Grosmont, actor-producer Damian Lewis linked up with his writer-director brother Gareth for THE BAKER, a black comedy about a hitman-for- hire who discovers he prefers working with a dif- ferent kind of bread.
Talking of collaborations, director David Richards and DP Andrew Speller who made the wedding comedy-drama, Perfect Day, last year, have just completed LITTLE DEVIL for ITV, examin- ing the flipside of nuptial bliss. Romance of every kind of hue is to the fore in PARIS JE T’AIME, an ambitious portmanteau film featuring 20 short sto- ries related to the famous arrondissements in the City of Light. Filmmakers like The Coen Brothers, Gerard Depardieu, Tom Tykwer, Christopher Doyle, Wes Craven and Alexander Payne are all involved in this remarkably cosmopolitan project.
All this plus a report on the Shammasian brothers’ short film THE CARRIAGEWAY, not to mention a double helping of COMMERCIAL BREAK from Ireland, details of The Golden Compass, the year’s biggest production which has just begun filming in the UK, and a round-up of Fujifilm news in Festivals & Events. ■
