“I THINK THE ETERNA 400T IS TREMENDOUSLY
The client basically wanted a film that represented some of the potential storylines, which would demonstrate
of the futuristic soldier characters in the game. We were just trying to do all this in a long form ad running to about two minutes, rather like a movie trailer in its own right.
We shot it over three days in Budapest, which doubled for our Moscow setting after a fictitious military coup, where the Ghost Recon soldiers are sent in to help the ordinary people resisting this revolution. The locations were fantastic; we shot in a bunker complex, and we had street scenes. The light was great, all snowy and bleak, which was exactly what we wanted.
I chose the 35mm Fujicolor ETERNA 400T because I wanted to burn in a look as I didn’t want to leave everything to the grade. I wanted to shoot it as if I was shooting a movie, and I wanted a

very low contrast, de-saturated look. I actually shot that and pull processed it. I didn’t colour correct it, so it brought out the blue. I just put the skin tones back in with a little bit of a coral filter, so the rest felt cold and bleak and ended up looking fantastic.
I’ve done this before with this particular film stock. I think it’s tremendously useful for process and effects shots. I love it; there’s nothing else like it. You always want to try and reflect the mood and the emotions of a film with your cinematography, and it’s the same with Ben Mor’s selection of camera placement. You can create a feeling just by the visual approach to the piece. If you think of it in terms of a set of paints and paintbrushes and canvasses, then you select your tools accordingly.
There was a rough continuity we were working to, a storyline, but we were aware that what we were shooting was like a series of
highlights from a movie, a succession of money shots if you like, with a little bit of chronology so that it made sense. At any one time there were our ‘actors’ – actually four guys who were special forces soldiers in the Hungarian army – along with 20 or 30 extras, plus fires and explosions and all sorts of other stuff going on.
There were lots of CGI elements, which were put in later, and all of this had to be considered while we were shooting. It
was pretty complicated, and
quite amazing that we shot it
